Raising Heart (レイジングハート Reijingu Hāto) is Nanoha Takamachi's Intelligent Device. She receives a number of upgrades in the series.

She refers to Nanoha as "master". As an Intelligent Device, she provides assistance and advice in the processing of magical attacks and fire control.

Name[]

The official spelling has been confirmed as "Raising Heart" in various canonical materials. However, early translation rendered its name as "Raging Heart". The different spellings exist because the Japanese kana "ジ" is treated differently in different systems of romanizing Japanese. The seldom-used Kunrei system renders it as zi, while the more common Hepburn system renders it as ji. However, the consonant at the beginning of the syllable is neither English z nor English j, but a sound that does not occur in English; the closest English sound is that of j. Thus the English pronunciation of "Raging Heart" is probably the closest to the original Japanese pronunciation of the name.

Besides, "Heart" in her name stems from the fact that the original design of Raising Heart, as seen in the Lyrical Toy Box, did include a large heart-shaped crystal, which was replaced with a red sphere in Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha.

She is officially renamed as Raising Heart Exelion[1] (レイジングハート・エクセリオン Reijingu Hāto Ekuserion) after the upgrade in A's, but similar to Bardiche Assault's case, most of the time Nanoha simply calls her Raising Heart like before.

In the movie continuity, she is known as Raising Heart Streamer (レイジングハート・ストリーマ Reijingu Hāto Sutorīma) in the re-adjusted form of Formula Cannon in Detonation.

Raising Heart is also titled the "Staff of Mage" (魔導師の杖 Madōshi no Tsue) in the early series.[2]

Appearances[]

SAF

Standalone Flight Mode in Force

Raising Heart appears primarily alongside Nanoha in TOS, A's manga, A's, StrikerS manga, StrikerS, ViVid and Force.

She first appears in Nanoha (ep.1), carried by Yuuno Scrya in Standby Mode before he gives it to Nanoha. Notably in The MOVIE 1st adaptation, Yuuno is explained to be only a "guest" user (外部使用者) instead of registering as her master. For a guest user, only the searching and sealing functions could be used.

The exact origins of Raising Heart are a mystery. She was obtained by Yuuno by chance while exploring some ruins. No other users have been registered to her before Yuuno,[3] and her AI could not be activated fully before her acquisition by Nanoha.[4]

After being badly damaged in the first fight with Vita's Graf Eisen in A's, Raising Heart is upgraded into Raising Heart Exelion by Mariel Atenza with an automatic-type Belkan cartridge system due to her insisted request. Since then, she is capable of a larger range of attacks with cartridges (loaded in magazines akin to those used in modern automatic weapons).

By the time of Force, Raising Heart Exelion additionally assumes a new Standalone Flight Mode, so that she can still support Nanoha, who needs both hands to control her Fortress and Strike Cannon.

Alternate continuities[]

In the Brave Duel continuity, certain forms of Raising Heart and Raising Heart Exelion are adapted as Nanoha's Brave Duel Device (see Raising Heart).

Forms[]

Forms Primary continuity Movie continuity
Raising Heart (レイジングハート)
Standby Mode
(スタンバイモード
Sutanbai Mōdo)
[5]
Takes the form of a red spherical crystal with diameter of around 1.5cm. In this form she can perform some supportive magics as well as image training for Nanoha.

First seen in Nanoha (ep.1).

Equivalent to that in the primary continuity.
Device Mode
(デバイスモード
Debaisu Mōdo)
Takes the form of a white-and-pink staff capped by a red crystal suspended within a partial gold ring with two exhaust valves (somewhat resembling the staff used by Wavemasters in .hack).

First seen in Nanoha (ep.1).

Similar to that in the primary continuity, but blue and white parts are added to the neck and tail of the staff.
Shooting Mode
(シューティングモード
Shūtingu Mōdo)
The gold section of Raising Heart's head dematerialises and reforms into a more squared shape with two prongs. It is mainly used for shooting spells and basic bombardments like Divine Buster.

First seen in Nanoha (ep.3).

Shooting Mode in the primary continuity is redesigned as Canon Mode (カノンモード Kanon Mōdo),[6] with an extra 180°-turnable trigger unit (firing grip) on the neck of the staff in addition to the additional blue and white parts.

It also covers the original Sealing Mode by enabling sealing functions in the spells fired.

Sealing Mode
(シーリングモード
Shīringu Mōdo)
Raising Heart's head extends away from the main body, and two mana wings spread from the gap. It is mainly used for Sealing and Starlight Breaker.

First seen in Nanoha (ep.2) and not succeeded by Raising Heart Exelion.

Raising Heart Exelion (レイジングハート・エクセリオン)
Standby Mode
(スタンバイモード
Sutanbai Mōdo)
Basically unchanged from the original Standby Mode. She is occasionally seen floating in Standby Mode. In ViVid, two mana fins (similar to Flier Fin) are usually generated while doing so.

First seen in A's (ep.4).

Equivalent to that in the primary continuity.
Axel Mode
(アクセルモード
Akuseru Mōdo)
Basically unchanged from the original Device Mode, except for the additional Cartridge System resembling a rifle magazine at the neck. It is mainly used for flight assistance, defense support and projectile guidance.

First seen in A's (ep.4).

Similar to that in the primary continuity without notable changes other than those in Device Mode.
Buster Mode
(バスターモード
Basutā Mōdo)
Enhanced version of Shooting Mode. In StrikerS, the Accelerate Charge System is also available under this mode, generating three mana wings.[7]

First seen in A's (ep.7); aka Mode Two in Riot Force 6.

Redesigned as Bustercanon Mode (バスターカノンモード Basutākanon Mōdo) without notable changes other than those in Canon Mode.
Exelion Mode[1]
(エクセリオンモード
Ekuserion Mōdo)
Being the Full Drive of Raising Heart Exelion, the head of Buster Mode widens and extends away from the body and its prongs move closer together, resembling a golden spearhead set with a red crystal. A rocket engine is equipped at the end tip as part of the Accelerate Charge System. When in Exelion Mode (A.C.S Open Mode), a set of mana wings sprout from the sides of the spearhead near the gem, two more sets of mana fins are generated at the neck, and Strike Flame is activated.

First seen in A's (ep.11) and replaced by Exceed Mode in StrikerS.

Similar to that in the primary continuity without notable changes other than those in Bustercanon Mode.
Exelion II Mode
(エクセリオンⅡモード
Ekuserion Tsū Mōdo)
N/A The modified and enhanced version of Exelion Mode, as seen from Reflection (0067) onward.
Fortress Mode
(フォートレスモード
Fōtorsu Mōdo)
N/A Introduced in Reflection, Raising Heart can be stored inside (integrated with) Nanoha's Barrier Jacket Fortress Mode for armament control assistance, as well as emergency defenses when necessary. Presumably, Raising Heart herself is physically same as Standby Mode here.
Formula Mode
(フォーミュラモード
Fōmyura Mōdo)
N/A The modification of Barrier Jacket Fortress Mode near the end of Reflection, after Raising Heart and Fortress System are enhanced by a nano machine and a Variant Core provided by Amitie Florian.

In Detonation artwork, Exelion II Mode is used along Barrier Jacket Formula Mode, indicating Fortress and Formula Modes may not be official forms of Raising Heart.

Exceed Mode
(エクシードモード
Ekushīdo Mōdo)
Replacement to Exelion Mode in StrikerS, it is assumed to be the "reinforcement" to Raising Heart's frame mentioned by Amy Limietta in A's. Exceed Mode (A.C.S Open Mode) is same as that in Exelion Mode.

First seen in StrikerS (ep.12); aka Mode Three in Riot Force 6.

N/A
Blaster Mode
(ブラスターモード
Burasutā Mōdo)
Addition to Exceed Mode with three levels. The first level increases Nanoha's power dramatically while damaging the health of both her and the device. The second and third levels generate Blaster Bits (two and four respectively) which can duplicate her spells or attack independently, at the cost of increased strain.

First seen in StrikerS (ep.23).

N/A
Standalone Flight Mode
(単独飛行形態
Tandoku Hikō Keitai)
Resembles a larger version of a Blaster Bit with blade edges. While still fulfilling all her functions as an Intelligent Device, Raising Heart floats in the air and can be used as an auxiliary control Device, a mobile shield, or a cutting weapon using the new blade edges. The need for such upgrade arose because Nanoha's new armament Strike Cannon requires both hands to wield.[8]

First seen in Force (ch.11).

N/A
Raising Heart Streamer (レイジングハート・ストリーマ)
Raising Heart Estrea (レイジングハート・エストレア)

The Exelion Mode may have been named after either a battleship from Gunbuster or Excellen Browning from Super Robot Wars. Supporting the latter, Nanoha's Barrier Jacket resembles Excellen's mech the Weissritter, and after the airing of A's, Super Robot Wars introduced a character named Haken Browning in a possible reference to Bardiche's Haken Form.

Blaster System's Blaster Bits are based on the bits and funnels used in Mobile Suit Gundam. As the weapons of Amuro Ray's ultimate mecha, this would seem the logical extension of Nanoha's "Gundam-like" design.

Functions[]

Upgrades Description
Auto Guard Nanoha's Auto Guard spell set by Raising Heart is Protection.
Cartridge System Belkan Cartridge System CVK792-A (hextuple automatic type). Cartridges are set in magazines (マガジン Magajin), which are sometimes used as a sub-grip when Nanoha bombards (except in the movie continuity).

In The Gears of Destiny, a special program cartridge named Nebelwerfer (ネーベルヴェルファー Nēberu Verufā, Ger. "Smoke Mortar") is used. Its name is presumably a reference to the rocket launcher Nebelwerfer.

Accelerate Charge System The Accelerate Charge System, usually abbreviated as A.C.S, allows rapid acceleration under Exelion/Exceed Mode. When activated (as A.C.S Open Mode), Raising Heart Exelion generates six mana wings/fins and a Strike Flame bayonet from her tip.
Blaster System The Blaster System enhances the Device user's powers greatly at the cost of lives of the user and Device. It may generate Blaster Bits (ブラスタービット Burasutā Bitto), i.e. drones capable of independent attack resembling and made from the same materials as the head of Raising Heart Exelion, to increase the power or effective area of spells.

First seen in StrikerS (ep.23) which is set in 0075, but its research has actually started in 0066, as foreshadowed in the scenario of The Gears of Destiny.[9]
